Robots are credited by increasing efficiency in some cases of industrial use. But, as the main British wholesale service just found out, it doesn’t mean they are not prone to accidents like humans. Ocado – who competed with Amazon Fresh – has been forced to cancel orders for several customers after a robotic collision triggered a fire in his warehouse in Southeast London. The incident seems to involve three bots in the grid and leads to the evacuation of the customer’s fulfillment center, the company said.
Ocado revealed that the fire triggered the site sprinkler system, but was contained by his mitigation measures. Even so, the Fire London brigade was called to the scene to handle Blaze, the company added. Overall, Ocado said the damage was limited to only 1 percent of its grid, adding that it would take a week for the facility to continue the operation.
The Southeast London warehouse of the UK company contains 3,000 robots that move 13 feet per second when taking grocery. Ocado also licenses its automatic platforms to others including kroger in the US, which recently deployed a system in the center of 375,000 square feet of customers in Monroe, Ohio.
Based on the proximity of the droid and the rapid nature of their duties, it is a miracle that more clashes have not happened. As specified in the recent CNN report, the bot – is described as a “washing machine on the wheel” – moves in five millimeters with each other on the system such as the grid to collect items. Ocado even told news publications “we basically play chicken with them: they go on a collision course just to divert at the last moment.” Robots are credited by increasing efficiency in some cases of industrial use.
