I will admit, the first few minutes of this episode have me for a moment. Over the past few seasons, Rick and Jerry have built relationships through several adventures that are reluctant together, and it feels like there are more reasons to be explored there. So when the episode starts with the premise they share some type of night together, I with all my heart believes that we will see the original Rick and Jerry bond moments.
It only took time to show to reveal that Rick only used Jerry to pay off one of his debts. Fortunately, for US audience, Rick debt owes the Hellraiser version that makes the episode that is very silly but funny.
We quickly learned that Rick had taken Jerry to get along with a group of demons because the devil got the pleasure of pain. And what a more painful experience than watching Jerry just live his life as the most honest self? Apparently, Rick sells Devils a group of Piss Moor Meathooks (it won’t be the Hellraiser parody with Meathooks) and owes the devil. A full night Jerry fooled himself a good way to pay it off.
Pleasure and pain
‘Amortycan Grickfitti’ is not really kicking to teeth high until Beth joins pleasure. This is where I realized how good Rick / Beth / Jerry dynamically really worked at this event. Jerry was a loser, Rick Shits on Jerry, Beth defended Jerry but Beth wasn’t better than Rick because he finally demeaned Jerry too.
The last few seasons have returned to how similar Beth and Rick. As soon as Beth won Rick because he used Jerry to solve his own personal problems, he quickly joined Jerry’s mocking for the entertainment of Satan. Because Rick loved Beth, he was reluctant to have to save Jerry when the adventure was definitely wrong and made it in danger.
The concept of Devil Hellraiser is a simple and stupid idea. You must praise the author for how well it works. The logic behind the pleasure that comes from pain is so absurd so trying to wrap your head around it just makes you laugh. In pain makes them feel good, but feel good is what makes them upset, which in turn makes them happier.
It’s stupid, funny, and a great plot device when Rick can’t use many weapons to get rid of demons. Of course, as usual, there is a Rick-powered solution for this problem, but it’s one that makes fun of the concept of how this devil works.
